Our story…

It all began in 2012, when we met at a bar. Early parts of our relationship were spent daydreaming about opening some sort of business - Steve even went so far as to buy a sausage maker thinking that would be his life’s calling. Thankfully, sausage making didn’t stick but spending time in the kitchen did spark new inspiration. We needed new cutting boards but had sticker shock every time we went shopping. So, after countless YouTube tutorials, Steve decided to make his own - a theme that now applies to just about everything we need. It turned out that he was pretty good at making end grain cutting boards and friends and family were soon calling with requests for them. This solidified Steve’s love of woodworking and 9 years later, he’s made some pretty cool stuff. In addition to making our 1932 home ‘livable’ - a term still up for debate - Steve somehow finds the time to spend in the woodshop and has even picked up leather working. Janell bakes way too many cookies, enjoys making things that require her to sew in mostly straight lines, and is constantly thinking about what new kitchen devices Steve can make for her.

We have been crafting under the brand Bert & Stwo (our nick names - long story) for nearly 9 years now and you may notice this logo on some of the items you see on our site. Grain Goods was launched as a way to bring together all of our hobbies - woodworking, leatherworking and baking.

We still use the first cutting board Steve made and with proper care, we hope to have it for as long as we are cooking together. Our goal for Grain Goods is to create sustainable, handmade items that serve a purpose. We are excited to share some of the things we’ve made that have found their way into our daily lives with you, or partner with you on a custom project. Please reach out!
